Italian Foreign Ministry: Turkish operation in Syria threatens European security

An operation by Turkish troops in Syria has jeopardized the security of all of Europe because of the possibility of the release of imprisoned terrorists, said Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Mayo.

“This Turkish aggression destabilizes the region and jeopardizes the security of not only Italy, but of the whole Europe, because foreign militants who are on this territory and suffered defeat from the Kurds risk being released. In some cases, they have already been freed because were in Kurdish prisons”, – he said on Wednesday, speaking in the Senate.

According to him, Italy notified NATO of the decision to cease participation in the Active Fence operation on the border of Turkey and Syria. In addition to the Italian units, the Samp-T air defense systems will return to their homeland, the minister confirmed.

Following the speech by Di Mayo, the Senate adopted a resolution calling on the Italian government to “evaluate, in accordance with the EU position, the conditions that will open diplomatic channels with Damascus”.

According to the minister, regarding the possibility of a dialogue with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, “the time has come to take a small step forward, within the framework of the constitutional committee, which is our beacon”.
“But lifting sanctions now would mean weakening the positive trend within the committee”, –  the Italian Foreign Minister emphasized.
