Brussels court postpones the extradition of Puchdemon to December 16

Brussels court postponed the consideration of the case of the extradition of the ex-head of the Catalan government, Carles Puigdemon, to the Spanish authorities, until December 16, the politician and his lawyer told the reporters on Tuesday.

“The Belgian prosecutor’s office agreed with the Spanish court’s extradition request, and we will dispute this. The procedure now involves the submission of written arguments to the court. We have time to draw them up. Then we will meet again in court on December 16. We will declare the defendant’s immunity. There will be no court decisions before this deadline”, – said one of the lawyers, Simon Bekaert.

This information was also confirmed by Puigdemont himself, saying that he “believes in a Belgian justice solution” in December.

The Spanish Supreme Court on October 14 sentenced 12 Catalan politicians involved in an illegal independence referendum and further proclamation of independence by the regional parliament in 2017. Nine politicians were found guilty of rebellion and sentenced to 9 – 13 years in prison. Three more – in disobedience, they are sentenced to fines.

Member of the Supreme Court of Spain, Pablo Llaren, on the same day issued European and international arrest warrants for the former head of the Catalan general Puchdemon, who is hiding from Spanish justice in Belgium.
