Chilean authorities will cancel the state of emergency in the country, introduced due to protests, President Sebastian Pignera told the reporters.
“After talking with the armed forces, I want to state that, if circumstances permit, the state of emergency will be lifted starting from Sunday 00:00”, – he said. The President’s statement was broadcast on Twitter.
The reason for the start of mass protests in Chile was the increase in metro fares in early October. However, this is only one of the reasons. Residents are opposed to the impossibility of obtaining a decent free education and health services, low salaries and rising tariffs.
At first, peaceful, by October 18, the actions grew into clashes with law enforcement officers and pogroms, killing 19 people. Military and armored vehicles were pulled into large cities, a state of emergency was declared in a number of cities, and curfews were regularly introduced.
