Havana condemns the coup and destabilization attempts in Bolivia, unleashed by the country’s opposition and forced by the United States, said Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel.
The current president of Bolivia, Evo Morales, on October 24, announced his victory in the first round of presidential elections. The vote count was criticized both by the opposition and by the Organization of American States, which acted as an observer in the elections. The OAS advised a second round. During the vote count in a number of cities in Bolivia, demonstrations began, which grew into riots. Protesters set fire to the regional branches of the election court. Already aware of eight victims.
“We condemn the coup attempt and the campaign of distortion, destabilization and violence unleashed… by the opposition and escalated by the United States against peace and public security in Bolivia. The outstanding leader of Bolivia, whose indigenous peoples have been slandered for centuries, was able to bring the country to a number of States with the highest growth and reserves in the region”, – the Cuban President said during a speech at the summit of the non-aligned Movement in Baku and congratulated Morales on his victory in the elections.
Cuba also condemns in the strongest terms “the decision to renew the inter-American Treaty of mutual assistance in order to support the us desire to revive the Monroe doctrine… by reclaiming as a “backyard” the continent’s free market”, – Diaz-Canel said.
The 18th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement opened on Friday in the capital of Azerbaijan. The organization includes 120 countries that have refused to participate in military blocs. Among the guests of honor, the presidents of Iran, Cuba, Venezuela and Turkmenistan, and in all 158 countries confirmed their participation.
