Athens intends to maintain and deepen relations with Russia and bring them to the proper level, said Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias in an interview with Parapolitika radio station.
Dendias confirmed that he will visit Moscow soon, he believes that his meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will be held on November 6.
“We have traditional relations with Russia, we will maintain and deepen them. There was, I will not say termination, but, say, the deterioration of relations with the Russian side during the previous government, I do not need to be reminded. We must put this train back on track”, – said Dendias. According to him, Greece has historically been negotiating with Russia.
“Russia is a country that represents itself as a player in our wider region with its own characteristics, with its potential, with its weaknesses, we do not exaggerate or underestimate the role of anyone. This is a country with which Greece has traditionally spoken and may have its support on many issues. Recently, for example, Russian positions have not reached the level we would like”, – the Greek minister said.
He said that in part of Greek society there is a feeling that Russia always supports Greece.
“The last position on the Cyprus issue is far from what we would like”, – Dendias said. According to him, Athens wants issues with Russia on which there is agreement and agreement to be at the level proposed by Greece.
“And we will strive to restore our relations with Russia as they should be”, – said the Greek Foreign Minister.
