Russian President Vladimir Putin expects that the visit of the leader of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Felix Tshisekedi, to Russia will contribute to enhancing mutual relations.
There are opportunities for this in all areas. Significant prospects are observed in the mining industry.
Putin met with the DRC president on Wednesday on the sidelines of the Russia-Africa forum in Sochi. The Russian leader noted that next year the countries will celebrate the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations.
“Nevertheless, our meeting today is the first contact between our countries at the highest level. I am convinced that your visit to Russia, dear Mr. President, will contribute to enhancing mutual relations, and in all directions”, – Putin said.
He noted that Russian-Congolese cooperation is constructive and mutually respectful; Russia sees the DRC as one of the most promising partners on the African continent. The parties have significant potential in the trade and investment sphere – it is “connected with a large number of natural resources and with the capabilities of the citizens of your country”, – Putin said, referring to a colleague.
Speaking about the history of bilateral relations between Russia and the DR Congo, the president mentioned that already in the first months of independence of the republic in 1960, the USSR provided substantial assistance to the government of the then prime minister, Patrice Lumumba.
“This is an absolutely legendary man, a legendary fighter for the liberation of African peoples from colonialism. In our country, he was very famous, enjoyed great popularity and support among the population of the Soviet Union”, – the Russian leader noted.
The Russia-Africa Summit and Economic Forum is being held in Sochi on October 23-24. The summit invited the leaders of all 54 states of the continent. The co-chairs of the summit are Russia and Egypt.
