South Korea does not yet see the obvious results of the DPRK’s denuclearization, said Lee Hae-chan, chairman of the ruling Democratic Party.
“Over the past year and a half, we have seen very great results, but regarding the issue of denuclearization and the establishment of peace on the Korean peninsula, we still do not see obvious results”, – he said at a meeting with Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council of the Russian Federation Andrei Turchak.
The DPRK delegation led by DPRK Foreign Minister Special Envoy Kim Myung-Gil and the US delegation led by Special Representative for the DPRK Stephen Bigan held official working negotiations in Stockholm on October 5, the first time since the February summit in Hanoi. However, without waiting for the end of the negotiations, North Korean diplomats left the venue for a working meeting, after which Ambassador Kim Dong Gil, on special instructions from the DPRK Foreign Ministry, announced the failure of working negotiations with the United States.
According to Kim Myung-Gil, “the United States appeared empty-handed”, not taking into account the requirements of the DPRK. The US side refuted this statement, noting that the discussions were “good” with a number of new “creative ideas”. Later, the DPRK Foreign Ministry said that if the US does not get rid of the “hostile policy”, they will not offer a realistic solution for denuclearization and security guarantees by the end of the year, North Korea will not continue negotiations.
