The dreams of one of the leaders of the pro-Western “ACUM” bloc, Andrei Năstase, have been clouded by the results of voting in the local elections, at least from the second attempt to take the seat as an example of the Moldovan capital.
According to reports, among the eighteen candidates, the leader was the representative of the socialist Party Ion Cheban. At the same time, Nastase is behind him by more than 9 percent of the vote — 31.09% against 40.16% of the leader of the race.
In third place was Dorin Chirtoaca, who previously served as the mayor General of the municipality of Chisinau. 10.17% of voters voted for him. He is followed by the representative of the national unity party Octavian Tsyku with his 4.76% of the vote. The fifth place was taken by Valery Klimenko – the candidate from the party “Șor” (The Republican Socio-Political Movement Equality), the leader of which is now hiding from justice. Klimenko received only 3.04% of the vote.
Given the results of the vote, in which none of the candidates was able to get the required number of votes, Chisinau will have a second round of elections.
As News Front previously reported, Nastase and Ceban were also the main rivals in the capital’s mayoral election last year. Nevertheless, through the efforts of the then leader of the ruling Democratic Party, Vladimir Plahotniuc, the results of the vote were not recognized, and Andrei Nastase, who won with a margin of 5.14% of the vote, could not take the post.
Only this fall, they decided to recognize the results of last year’s elections. However, this only hit the authority of Nastase, who was actually offered to become mayor of Chisinau for less than two weeks.
