Memorial sign in honor of the liberated Red Army opened in Belgrade

A plaque in honor of the Red Army fighters who liberated Belgrade was inaugurated on Sunday in the main square of the Serbian capital.

Serbia these days marks the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the capital and the country from Nazi invaders. On the eve of the ceremonies was attended by Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev.

The opening of the memorial sign on Republic Square in the very center of the city on Sunday was attended by Belgrade Deputy Governor Goran Vesich and Russian Ambassador Alexander Botsan-Kharchenko.

“I congratulate our friends from Russia who celebrate with us today because it is our common victory. The liberation of Belgrade is a common victory for Serbia and Russia, Yugoslavia and the USSR,” the deputy head said.

“Here, on this square, the most severe battles were fought for the liberation of Belgrade, and as a result the whole city was liberated,” the Russian ambassador said.

A plate mounted in the slabs of the square informs that the liberator soldiers were buried at this place, whose remains were transferred to the memorial to the liberators of Belgrade in 1954.
