US President Donald Trump repeats the dangerous “strategic mistake” of his predecessor Barack Obama, starting the process of withdrawing the US armed forces from Syria.
Such a statement was made by the leader of the Republican majority in the US Senate, Mitch McConnell, in his publication for The Washington Post.
“The withdrawal of the US Armed Forces from Syria is a serious strategic mistake,” the senator says, comparing the president’s decision with the “reckless” withdrawal of troops from Iraq initiated by Barack Obama. According to McConnell, this is exactly what caused the heyday of the Islamic State terrorist organization.
“Even if the five-day ceasefire, which was announced on Thursday, is respected, what happened over the past week has thrown back the American campaign against the Islamic state and other militants,” the politician writes.
In addition, he lamented that the retreat of the US armed forces would strengthen his position to Bashar al-Assad. “In addition, we are losing sight of Russia’s aspirations to consolidate its dominant position in Syria,” McConnell added.
