Chile declares state of emergency due to riots

In the capital of Chile, Santiago, protests began over the increase in metro fares, DW reports. The riots began when the fare increased during peak hours – from 800 to 830 pesos ($ 1.17).

The demonstrators damaged almost all the metro stations, throwing Molotov cocktails at the stations. In total, almost all 164 stations were damaged, in particular, turnstiles and gates were destroyed. Losses are estimated at 700 thousand dollars.

The metro stopped working. “The entire network is closed through riots and destruction that impede the minimum security conditions for passengers and workers,” the report said. It is expected that the metro will be closed throughout the weekend; traffic can only be restored next week.

On the night of October 19, demonstrators set fire to the buildings of the energy company ENEL and the Bank of Chile branch in the center of the capital. In different parts of Santiago, protesters built barricades. Clashes occurred between them and the police. Law enforcement officers used water cannons and tear gas against people.
