The roles of Russia and Iran in Syria intensified after the US departure, Merkel said

The roles of Russia and Iran in Syria were intensified after the withdrawal of the US troops from the northern regions of the SAR, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said.

“When I talk about the geopolitical consequences, we should reflect on the fact that the role of Russia, like Iran, has significantly increased in the region after the American soldiers were withdrawn. Where it will lead, you can’t say yet”, – she said onThursday, speaking in the Bundestag.

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan on October 9 announced the launch of Operation Source of Peace in northern Syria against the Kurdistan Workers Party and the Islamic State terrorist group banned in Turkey*. Turkish aviation attacked the city of Ras al-Ain and a number of other Syrian cities on the border of the two countries on the same day. Later the beginning of the ground part of the operation was announced. At the same time, the United States decided to withdraw its troops from northeast Syria, despite the fact that they consider the Syrian Kurds as one of the key allies in the region in the fight against ISIS*.
