In the Netherlands, farmers go on strike against authorities on trucks

Mass protests by farmers against government measures to reduce air pollution by reducing livestock production are held in the Netherlands, the portal Dutchnews reports.

In early October, thousands of Dutch farmers headed to The Hague to protest against government measures. Hundreds of farmers took part in the strike on trucks, which led to record traffic jams, their length exceeded a thousand kilometers. Farmers began their protests after a court in May ruled that the Netherlands violated European standards on air pollution, the Dutch left-liberal party D66 put forward a proposal to reduce livestock production in order to reduce air pollution.

On Wednesday, more than 20 thousand farmers arrived in The Hague to participate in the strike, eight thousand tractors filled the streets of the city, causing “chaos on the roads”, the publication said. Authorities used army trucks to block roads to the parliamentary truck complex. Many protesters spent the night outside parliament to continue the strike on Thursday.
Researchers say that agriculture accounts for the majority of nitrogen emissions into the atmosphere, which leads to serious pollution, but farmers doubt that these calculations are correct, the publication notes.
