The US does not want to break off relations with Turkey, Pompeo said

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the US’s goal is not to break relations with Turkey.

“Our goal is not to break off relations with Turkey. It is a member of NATO, we have important  security interests. Our goal is to block the opportunities for Turkey to continue such activities. We are working to stop this”, –  he said in an interview with Fox Business.

Pompeo also confirmed that he plans to hold a personal meeting with the Turkish president along with US Vice President Mike Pence. According to him, US President Donald Trump considers it important to hold high-level negotiations

Earlier, US President Donald Trump signed a decree imposing a sanctions regime against Turkey on the situation in northeastern Syria, where Ankara launched an offensive against Kurdish formations against the US allies. Trump described a wide range of possible future sanctions, including financial ones. So far, the ministries of defense and energy of Turkey, as well as the heads of these ministries and the deputy chairman of the ruling Justice and Development Party in Turkey, are on the list of sanctions.
