South Korea expects help from Moscow in dialogue with North Korea

The head of the South Korean parliament, Moon Hee-sang, asked Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matvienko to help establish inter-parliamentary ties between the two Korean states and convince the DPRK of the need to renounce nuclear weapons, the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea said on Tuesday.

Moon Hee-sang made such a request at a meeting with Matvienko in Belgrade at a session of the Inter-Parliamentary Union.
The report notes that on October 23-24, a delegation of the Supreme People’s Assembly of the DPRK is scheduled to visit Russia and its meeting with Matvienko. In this regard, South Korea hopes that Russia will contribute to the solution of inter-Korean problems.

“Strongly make it clear to the North Korean delegation that only its denuclearization will allow everyone to win,” the press service of the South Korean parliament quoted Moon Hee-sang addressing Matvienko. According to him, only with denuclearization it will be possible to connect both the railways of the South and North with Russia, and the creation of a gas pipeline from Siberia.

“Tell North Korea to cooperate and exchange between the parliaments of the South and the North”,  the words of the speaker of the National Assembly are also quoted.

According to his press service, Matvienko, for her part, assured Moon Hee-sang that Russia will make efforts to promote trilateral cooperation with both Korean states and hopes to play its role in enhancing inter-parliamentary ties between the South and the North.
