The British ambassador in Moscow, Laurie Bristow, became interested in the Russian concept of security in the Persian Gulf, said Andrei Baklanov, assistant to the deputy chairman of the Federation Council, deputy chairman of the Association of Russian Diplomats Council.
The situation in the Persian Gulf region has recently become more complicated due to several incidents with merchant ships and after attacks on oil facilities in Saudi Arabia.
“Last week, the British ambassador to Moscow asked me exactly on this issue. We met with him and he said that the UK was interested in our concept of security. Visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to Saudi Arabia and the UAE : mutual cooperation and regional security”,- Baklanov said at a round table.
In July, Russia unveiled its concept of collective security in the Persian Gulf. Representatives of the Arab states, Iran, Turkey, the “five” permanent members of the UN Security Council, the European Union, the Arab League and the BRICS countries presented the document to the Russian Foreign Ministry. The measures proposed by Moscow to strengthen security in the region included the refusal to permanently deploy groups of extra-regional states in the Gulf countries, the creation of demilitarized zones in the region, the establishment of “hot lines”, and the exchange of information on the purchase of weapons and armed forces. Russia also proposes the creation of a security organization, which would include Russia, the USA, China, India, the European Union and other interested parties.
