In the afternoon, law enforcement officers sprayed tear gas after protesters started throwing Molotov cocktails at the government complex, – the police said.

The newspaper South China Morning Post reports that the police used pepper gas as well. After the plastic barricades caught fire around the government complex in the Admiralty area , water cannons were launched, but the water was directed not at people, but at the air.

“A large group of protesters are currently throwing Molotov cocktails to the government complex building. After several warnings that had no effect, the police used tear gas and minimal force to disperse the demonstrators”. It is also reported that Molotov cocktails were thrown into the building of the main police department.

Mass protests provoked by the extradition law have been taken place in Hong Kong since early June. The Hong Kong government has proposed an amendment to the existing “Running Suspected Offenders Act.” The proposed mechanism would allow the issuance of suspects to jurisdictions Hong Kong does not have an agreement with, including mainland China. However, opponents of the bill believe that this will undermine the independence of the judiciary in Hong Kong in accordance with the principle of “one country, two systems” and allow the central government to fight against people who are objectionable to the authorities.
