Each anniversary of the armed conflict in South Ossetia forces the West to show all its indignation regarding the situation in the Caucasus.
This was told by a leading researcher at the Center for Euro-Atlantic Security at the Institute for International Studies, Sergey Markedonov, commenting on the dissatisfaction of the US State Department with the construction of border facilities between Georgia and South Ossetia.
So, the representative of the State Department, Morgan Ortagus, said that the construction of the fence violates the rights of local residents, simultaneously accusing Russia and demanding that it withdraw troops from Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
According to the expert, in the process of delimitation recently there is nothing surprising. This is a routine process, which resumes whenever funds are allocated for it, and it is obvious that South Ossetia does not intend to abandon the distinction.
“It cannot be said that any resumption of work would provoke such a loud reaction from the West, as happened the other day. Rather, everything is done in accordance with the ritual that has been established in the last ten years. On the eve of the August events of 2008, rhetoric from the Allies of Tbilisi is usually tightened. The USA, Canada, as well as a number of EU countries send a clear signal to Moscow: they are not ready to recognize that the Russian Foreign Ministry defines the new realities in the Caucasus, ”said Sergey Markedonov.
