Bolivia: Opposition holds protest against Morales’s re-election bid

Hundreds gathered in the streets of La Paz on Wednesday as part of a nationwide protest against Bolivian President Evo Morales’s re-election bid for a fourth term.

Footage shows protesters with Bolivian flags and signs reading, “No re-election” as well as a heavy police presence. Protesters called for a nationwide strike starting on October 10, ahead of the October 20 election date.

Morales has been in office since 2006 and was initially constitutionally prevented from running for office for a fourth term in 2019. Morales’s government staged a referendum in 2016 on whether he should be allowed to run in 2019 which he narrowly lost.

However the President’s Movement for Socialism party nominated him as their candidate anyway and a ruling by Bolivia’s highest court in December 2017 subsequently eliminated all term limits on public office.
