German military demands compensation for the consequences of using depleted uranium in the Balkans

A group of former Bundeswehr servicemen demanded compensation for health damage due to work with dangerous depleted uranium during military operations in Iraq and the Balkans, while the Alternative for Germany party requested the Bundestag’s opinion on this matter.

According to the T-online portal, it’s about 220 soldiers and officers.

Earlier, on August 12, German authorities refused to pay compensation. Berlin claims that depleted uranium did not seriously harm health of the personnel. Nevertheless, the “International Organization of Physicians Against Nuclear Weapons” provides the reverse data, confirmed by statistics and studies.

Previously, the Italian military, who worked in Kosovo and Metohija and who later became ill with cancer, received compensation from their government. In Serbia, they argue that one of the consequences of the bombing of Yugoslavia by NATO aircraft in 1999 was the infection of the territory with radiation and the explosion of cancer. Last year, a commission was set up at the government level to study the environmental consequences of that operation.
