US President Donald Trump downplayed concerns about the ongoing trade war with China as stocks markets tumbled this week.
In comments made as he left Morristown, New Jersey, for a rally in New Hampshire on Thursday evening, Trump said negotiations between the world’s largest economies would resume shortly.
However, the president continued to insist that the US economy would be more resilient than its competitor.
The White House announced in early August an additional 10 per cent tariffs on $300bn (€270bn) of Chinese imports later this year. China has already promised “necessary countermeasures”.
The markets reacted poorly to the news, sparking a big sell-off on Wednesday.
Trump also fielded questions on the political situation in Hong Kong, encouraging the Chinese leadership to sit down with the protesters.
