Italy: ‘Open Arms’ rescue ship heads to Lampedusa after Italian ban suspended

A Spanish rescue vessel carrying 147 migrants is heading for the Sicilian port of Lampedusa in the early hours of Thursday, after an Italian court suspended a decision by far-right Italian Interior Minister Matteo Salvini to ban the ship from entering Italian waters. Footage shows the ‘Open Arms’ charity vessel sailing off Lampedusa escorted by two Italian military ships, following a decision by the Defence Minister, who refused to sign Salvini’s ban. The two ships would ensure a safe transfer of underage migrants on the island in case of necessity. The vessel was previously refused permission to dock and unload their rescued passengers by both Italy and Malta.
