Tear gas rained down on the village of Sur Baher on Friday, as Palestinian protesters rallied against the illegal Israeli demolition of Palestinian homes in the area.
Protesters holding Palestinian flags and a placard decrying the demolition marched through the area. An Israeli armoured police vehicle could be seen firing tear gas into the neighbourhood, causing fires to break out.
Earlier in the week, Israeli security forces arrived in East Jerusalem’s Sur Baher neighbourhood and evicted several Palestinian families. Bulldozers and diggers were brought in to destroy around 100 homes. Many Palestinians are reportedly homeless after the demolition.
Israel says the buildings were built illegally to close to the separation barrier in the occupied West Bank. However, residents say they had been given permits to build by the Palestinian Authority.
On Wednesday, the United States blocked a UN vote that would have condemned Israel’s actions.
