Libya: Over 60 bodies retrieved from coast after migrant boat capsizes

Rescue workers from the Red Crescent reportedly recovered 62 bodies off the Libyan coastal city of Khoms on Friday, after a ship carrying migrants capsized and caused the deaths of up to 150 people.

Footage shows officials from the emergency team placing a body on the beach inside a bag.

Sources including the UNHCR reported that the incident involved a single wooden boat that capsized with roughly 300 people on board, while a spokesperson for the Libyan coastguard reportedly said that two vessels had sank.

Some of the survivors were reportedly transferred to the Tajoura detention centre, which was hit by a deadly airstrike earlier this month.

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees has called it ‘the worst Mediterranean tragedy’ this year.
