Pro-police protesters gathered in central Hong Kong on Saturday to express their support for the security forces and to call for calm, as the Chinese territory braces for another mass anti-government protest planned for Sunday.
Protesters braved the rainy weather and waved miniature Chinese and Hong Kong flags to express their solidarity with the territory’s police forces and government in the face of some of the largest protests in Hong Kong’s history.
The “Safeguard Hong Kong” rally comes after weeks of mass protests following the announcement of an extradition bill that would allow people to be extradited to mainland China to face trial. Some of the protests have ended in violent clashes between police and protesters.
Although the bill has since been suspended, the largely youth-led protests have continued with protesters calling for it to be withdrawn entirely and for Hong Kong’s Chief Executive Carrie Lam to resign.
