The SPD’s foreign minister, Heiko Maas, announced a new initiative by the Federal Republic to “rescue refugees”.
He said that Germany will always be ready to receive migrants.
“Our proposal: Germany is ready to make a significant contribution and to ensure the continued maintenance of survivors.”
The refugee rescue agreement in the Mediterranean should no longer fail. The dispute over the distribution of the saved should be resolved. “The blockade must finally be finished,” said Maas.
“The struggle for life in every boat cannot be the solution.”
He expects the EU partners to take a “decisive step” in relation to those fleeing disaster.
