Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) raided two houses in the Rostov region and detained two suspected members of a militant organisation affiliated with the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIS/ISIL), footage released on Monday shows.
According to a statement from the FSB, the security services tracked down the suspects while examining links of another militant cell.
One suspect died after an unidentified explosive device detonated in his vehicle during the operation, the statement added. The FSB also seized improvised explosive devices, ammunition and detonators during the operation.
FSB said the suspected militants were planning to carry out terror attacks in major public spaces in Russia.
Russia’s Investigative Committee has opened an investigation into the terror plot.
