Georgia: Anti-government protests in Tbilisi entering third week

Hundreds of activists gathered in front of the Georgian parliament in Tbilisi to demand the resignation of Internal Affairs Minister Georgi Gakharia. The demonstration is due to enter its third week on Wednesday.

Protesters were seen setting up tents near the parliament building and carrying Georgian national flags. Just across the street, candies were being sold with inscriptions reading: “Stop Russia.”

The protests began after Russian MP Sergei Gavrilov addressed the Georgian Parliament from the seat of the speaker during an inter-parliamentary session on June 20. Anti-government demonstrators were sharing the square in front of parliament with anti-LBGT activists and people angry at the insulting speech against Russian president Vladimir Putin made by a TV host live on air.
