Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and UN Special Envoy Geir O. Pedersen discussed the formation of Syria’s Constitutional Committee during their meeting in Moscow on Friday.
“Russia, Turkey and Iran as guarantors of the agreement reached between the government and the opposition within the Astana Forum, will continue to make additional efforts to achieve solid and sustainable peace in Syria,” Lavrov said, adding that the countries planned to convene and hold a trilateral summit in the Astana Format.
“We are convinced that this is a decisive step in this formation of the Constitutional Committee which we hope will soon start to work,” the minister said.
Pedersen, who is travelling to Damascus next week, said he hoped for “constructive and good discussions,” which will hopefully enable us to move forward in finalising the establishment of the constitution committee.
