Democratic US Senator for Massachusetts and 2020 Presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren criticised the Trump administration’s policy on Iran as having “made the entire world a more dangerous place” during a rally in Miami on Tuesday.
“When Donald Trump ran for office, he promised to bring all of our troops home, and now he has created a crisis that has taken our country to the brink of war,” she said. “He has not made us safer, he has made the United States more at risk, he’s made the Middle East more dangerous, he’s made the entire world a more dangerous place.”
She added, “I think we need to admit that foreign policy by tweet is not working for us.”
The situation between the US and Iran has been escalating in recent weeks since Iran announced it would partially withdraw from the 2015 nuclear deal. On June 20th, a US surveillance drone was shot down by Iran who claims it had entered its airspace. The US responded by planning and launching a retaliatory strike which reportedly would have killed about 150 Iranians, before US President Donald Trump cancelled it at the last minute.
The US subsequently announced further sanctions directly targeting Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and other top officials on Monday.
