Georgia: Thousands gather for fourth day of anti-gov. protests in Tbilisi

Thousands gathered outside the Georgian parliament in Tbilisi on Sunday for a fourth night of anti-government protests in the city.

The protests began after Russian MP Sergei Gavrilov addressed parliament in Russian from the seat of the Georgian parliamentary speaker during the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly on Orthodoxy on Thursday, prompting several Georgian opposition politicians to leave the session.

“We are protesting against Russian occupation and Putin’s politics,” said Anna Abramishvili, one of the protesters.

Lasha Djayani , another protester, said “We want [Georgian Interior Minister] Giorgi Gaharia to leave and there must be early elections at the request of people.”

Some 240 people including 80 police officers were injured on Thursday, the first day of the protests. The violent clashes led Georgian Parliament Chairman Irakli Kobakhidze to resign.
