Merkel and Zelensky hold press conference in Berlin

Germany Chancellor Angela Merkel and newly elected Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky are talking to the press on Tuesday, June 18 after holding a meeting in Berlin.

During the meeting, the two leaders are expected to have discussed bilateral relations, the state of implementation of the Minsk agreements to settle the conflict in eastern Ukraine and the Ukrainian reform process.

In April, during the second round of the Ukraine’s presidential election, Merkel came under criticism after meeting only with Ukraine’s then President Petro Poroshenko but not with rival candidate Zelensky. However after Zelensky’s victory, Merkel congratulated him and guaranteed that her government will continue to support Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity in the future.
