Greens overtake Christian Democrats in latest German poll

Germany’s Green party has overtaken Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Christian Democrats (CDU/CSU) to become the most popular party in the country, according to an opinion poll published at the weekend.

The Greens are currently polling at 27%, 1% higher than the CDU/CSU. Meanwhile, the Social Democrats have fallen to a historical low of 12%, the Eurosceptic Alternative for Germany (AfD) is holding its ground at 11%, and the liberal FDP at 8%.

The Christian Democrats won last week’s European election with 28.9%, while the Greens came second with 20.5%, leaving the SPD third with just 15.8%.

Since last month’s European elections, the Greens are up 7-to-9 points in the polls.
