This year, the German authorities will create a new energy policy that will take into account gas supplies through the Nord Stream-2 pipeline, which makes the Ukrainian gas transmission system useless.
The corresponding statement was made by German Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel.
“We need to revise all our policies and approaches in the energy sector,” she said, speaking in Berlin.
Merkel noted that it is necessary to “ensure the security of energy supply” and implement Germany’s policy of refusing to use nuclear and coal energy.
“It also requires gas rates as an energy carrier if we want to abandon nuclear energy and coal,” she continued, noting that she supports the construction of Nord Stream 2, which can act “in parallel” with the Ukrainian GTS.
Recall that at the end of the year the contract for the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine expires, and the tense relations between Kiev and Moscow do not contribute to its extension. Thus, in 2020, Ukraine can start to live without transit, while in Europe gas supplies will be through the Nord Stream-2.
