Honduras: US Embassy targeted in anti-government protests

Demonstrators set fire to tyres placed on the steps of the US Embassy building in Tegucigalpa on Friday, as part of protests against privatisation reforms proposed by President Juan Orlando Hernandez’s government

For the second consecutive day, protesters clashed with the police. Demonstrators threw stones and other projectiles at police officers, who responded by with tear gas.

The protest movement began when the Honduran Congress passed two bills seeking reform to the ministries of health and education. Doctors and teachers immediately went on strike, claiming the bills were the first step towards privatisation.
