Libya’s UN-backed government blamed General Khalifa Haftar for a rocket attack on a hotel used by parliament in Tripoli on Friday. The entrance to a conference centre was reportedly damaged at the Rixos hotel which hosts a group of breakaway members of House of Representatives.
The internationally recognised Government of National Accord issued a statement saying the attack is ”considered a new and grave contravention of the International Human Rights Law which prohibits the targeting of civilians and civil sites”.
The forces of General Khalifa Haftar launched an offensive on Tripoli in April but so far failed to reach its objectives. On Tuesday, the UN special envoy for Libya warned the security council that the Tripoli fighting is just a beginning of a long and bloody war. The spokesperson for the UN chief said more than 78 thousand people were displaced by the fighting in Tripoli.
