German Chancellor Merkel took the decision of UK Prime Minister May to resign “with respect,” Deputy Government Spokesperson Martina Fietz said at a federal press conference (BPK) in Berlin on Friday.
Fietz noted that Merkel and May have shared “a good and trusting working relationship,” which she said would continue “as long as she is in office.”
According to Fietz, the German government wishes to maintain “a close cooperation with the British government.”
Commenting on the Iran nuclear dispute, the deputy government spokesperson reiterated Berlin’s stance that it can “only be solved peacefully through agreements and talks,” which she said would be expressed in talks with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
German Foreign Office Spokesperson Maria Adebahr also discussed Berlin’s decision to grant refugee status to two Hong Kong activists facing rioting charges in their homeland, saying that “for us [that] is a very legal, certain and clear procedure when people come here and seek asylum or claim refugee status; for that we have our laws and our Constitution.”
