UN Embargoe Violated: Turkey continues shipping arms to Libyan rebels

The Turkish authorities continue to support the Libyan government created under the auspices of the UN in Tripoli, headed by Prime Minister Faiz Saraj. This is evidenced by the recently arrived in Tripoli ship with Turkish military equipment and weapons.

A number of experts expressed fears that Ankara’s actions could only increase the armed confrontation between the government of Saraj and the Libyan National Army, loyal to field marshal Khalifa Haftar.

According to local media, the ship Amazon has flown into the port of Tripoli under the Moldovan flag, on which were new Turkish-made armored vehicles: Kipri II and Vuran. In addition, Ankara also delivered several sets of Stinger MANPADS and anti-tank missile systems to Tripoli. It should be noted that all weapons were handed over to the militants as part of the Muslim Brotherhood * terrorist group loyal to the Prime Minister of the Government in Tripoli.

Recall that Turkish President Recep Erdogan openly spoke in support of Tripoli. At the same time, Ankara violated the arms embargo on Libya imposed by the United Nations (UN) in 2011.

Commenting on the actions of Ankara, Boris Dolgov, a senior researcher at the Center for Arab and Islamic Studies at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, expressed his fears because Islamist militants are on the side of Tripoli.

“Turkey and Qatar support Faiz Saraj and armed groups that profess the ideology of the Muslim Brotherhood *,” said the expert, explaining the support of the terrorist organization from Ankara: “Turkey is interested in Libyan oil, therefore it strongly supports groups loyal to Tripoli” .

Summing up, the expert noted that the policy and actions of Turkey “do not lead to the end of the conflict in Libya.”
