Former Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski told the Welt publication that Germany does not perceive Russia as a danger and is implementing the Nord Stream 2 project for the sake of its economic ambitions.
“I believe that in Germany Russia is not perceived as a threat, and therefore no debate is held. A significant part of the Germans hopes for an alliance with Russia against the United States.”
Sikorski also recommended Germany to pay more attention to defense and security policies. As an example, he cited the fact that the budget of the Bundeswehr was four times higher than that of the Polish army. Poland has more tanks than Germany. He stressed that the current state of the German army, as well as Germany’s attitude to security policy issues, will be “perceived as a problem” by the partners of the Federal Republic.
Sikorski also criticized the attitude of Berlin to Nord Stream 2.
“By constructing the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines, the Germans put their economic interests above the geostrategic interests of Europe,” he said.
“I am well aware that Germany wants to become the center of gas distribution in Europe. The German chemical industry needs raw materials to compete with the United States. Everything is clear. But the countries of Eastern and Central Europe are becoming more and more vulnerable to Russia,” he said.
