Merkel: It won’t be possible to stop Nord Stream 2

The European Commission will not be able to block the construction of the Russian gas pipeline Nord Stream-2, said German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Wednesday, May 16, reports DW.

The Chancellor noted that the gas pipeline project was almost completely approved. At the same time, she acknowledged that the new gas directive of the European Union has the capacity to protest the construction of the gas pipeline.

The key issue in the Nord Stream 2, according to Merkel, is the importance of maintaining the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine after construction.

“Ukraine must remain a transit country, despite the Nord Stream,” said Merkel.
