Spain: Thousands hear Vox party pledge to defend nation against separatists

The far-right Vox party held its final campaign rally in Madrid on Friday before Spain heads to the polls on Sunday 28 April.

Thousands of Vox supporters gathered in the Plaza Colon in central Madrid to hear party leader Santiago Abascal present his platform for election.

Abascal promised to teach the next generation that “Spain is a great nation, because the strength of our Spanish nation is an example to the world. And never again will we be ashamed.”

He attacked the separatist movements in provinces like Catalonia saying “you fools, the unity of Spain is not in doubt. It is not to be messed with. The unity of Spain won’t be chosen in a referendum. The unity needs to be defended with all the consequences.”

Vox is looking to ride a wave of anti-separatist sentiment as Spaniards tire of the independence movement in Catalonia.
