Algeria: Thousands rally in Algiers on 10th Friday of anti-govt protests

Protesters flooded the streets of Algiers for the 10th consecutive Friday to express their discontent with the government’s rulers.

Protesters assembled on Grande-Poste and Maurice Audin squares and later marched through the capital with banners and flags.

Last week, the chairman of Algeria’s Constitutional Council, Tayib Belaiz, quit his post. He was one of the top figures targeted by protesters in mass demonstrations.

The protests in Algeria erupted in February, as the country’s long-time president, the 82-year-old Abdelaziz Bouteflika, who was rarely seen in public since suffering a stroke in 2013, was expected to announce his candidacy for a fifth term. The nationwide demonstrations ultimately prompted Bouteflika to resign on April 2.

One week later, Algeria’s parliament appointed Abdelkader Bensalah as the country’s interim-president for the next 90 days. Bensalah has since announced a new presidential election, scheduled for July 4, to choose a successor to Bouteflika.
