Russian schools being liquidated in Latvia, activists ready to apply to the ECHR

It does not take long for the parents of students to feel all the “charms” of the nationalist education reform, which translates the teaching of minorities into Latvian, said the representative of the Latvian Association for the Support of Russian Schools Konstantin Chekushin on the radio “Baltkom”.

According to him, after the entry into force of the decision of the Constitutional Court, which the day before recognized the reform being carried out by the authorities, the final authority to which people can turn is the European Court of Human Rights. At the same time, he stressed that no one was surprised by the decision of the Constitutional Court, although “everyone was waiting for a miracle.”

“The ECHR is the last institution where parents can turn, but for this it is necessary that the law take effect and it can prove the damage caused,” he said, noting that from a legal point of view it is very problematic. – We will now think on this topic. The only thing I would like to point out is despite such a court decision, this does not mean that we are wrong. Everyone should understand that we did not ask anything illegal and that would go against international norms and rules. We must understand that in our demand we have the right to exert political pressure on all parties in Latvia.”
