Thousands of students took to the streets of Algiers on Tuesday, as the ongoing protests against the country’s rulers enter their 9th week.
Last week, the chairman of Algeria’s Constitutional Council, Tayib Belaiz, quit his post. He was one of the top figures targeted by protesters in mass demonstrations.
The protests in Algeria erupted in February, as the country’s long-time president, the 82-year-old Abdelaziz Bouteflika, who was rarely seen in public since suffering a stroke in 2013, was expected to announce his candidacy for a fifth term. The nationwide demonstrations ultimately prompted Bouteflika to resign on April 2.
