For many years, Washington claimed that American missile defense systems deployed in Europe were directed against Iran or North Korea, vehemently denying that this weapon poses a threat to Russia, but now the United States no longer hide it and even openly declare it.
The German journalist Florian Retzer in his article for the publication Telepolis appreciated the prospect of deploying the THAAD missile defense systems in the Romanian city Deveselu, which is being done “at the request of the NATO leadership,” which is actually subordinate to the United States.
The purpose of such a step, as reported in the Pentagon, is to protect European countries from “external threats”. The author of the article draws attention to the assurances of EUCOM that these systems have no offensive potential, however, the fact that Aegis Ashore complexes are capable of launching Tomahawk cruise missiles with nuclear warheads has long been known.
However, it is now becoming clear that the US openly enter into a confrontation with Russia, not even trying to hide it, Retzer emphasizes: “The US, together with the North Atlantic alliance, has long denied and even accused Russia of spreading fake news [about offensive missile defense capabilities US and the threat to the Russian Federation]. But now the European command of the US Armed Forces still recognized this fact, talking about threats outside the “Euro-Atlantic region.”
At the same time, the author asks a question: is there really a “Russian threat” to which the EU and Washington regularly scare the European Union? According to him, this nominal term is used by the States only to strengthen in Europe, because the countries that have hosted other people’s missile defense systems are becoming dependent. “The Alliance regularly inspires us that“ Russian aggression ”exists. Nevertheless, there is no evidence of this until now, ”the journalist concluded.
