The troops loyal to Libya’s Government of National Accord have announced the start of the military campaign against the Libyan National Army under the command of Khalifa Haftar, Spokesman for the Libyan Army of the Presidential Council’s government Mohammed Gununu said on Sunday.
“We announce the start of the Volcano of Rage military campaign against the armed forces of Haftar,” the spokesman said. “We have formed an operative staff including units of the armed forces and the interior ministry. We will not allow the creation of a military state and we will continue to support Libya’s democratic development.”
Currently, Libya has two supreme executive authorities, namely Tripoli’s world-recognized Government of National Accord headed by Prime Minister Fayez al-Sarraj and the interim government headed by Prime Minister Abdullah al-Thani, which operates in the country’s east along with the elected parliament and is supported by the Libyan National Army.
On April 4, Haftar announced the launch of an offensive on Tripoli. Meanwhile, Fayez al-Sarraj ordered all military units subordinate to him to be on alert and to use force if necessary “to defend the civilian population and critical facilities.”.
