State of Palestine: Two killed on ‘Great March of Return’ anniversary

At least two were killed and more than 200 were injured as Israeli border forces opened fire and teargassed protesters commemorating ‘Land Day’ and the first anniversary of the ‘Great March of Return’ at Gaza’s eastern border in Shajaiya on Saturday.

Chairman of the Hamas Political Bureau Ismail Haniya also joined an event alongside border protests.

He had earlier called for a million protesters to gather at five sites along the border with Israel.

The ‘Great March of Return’ started on March 30, 2018. It has consisted of a series of protests along the Israeli-Palestinian border to demand the right for Palestinians to return to their families’ pre-1948 homes.

Land Day commemorates the events that transpired on March 30, 1976 where a Palestinian strike over Israeli plans to expropriate their land led to the deaths, injuries and arrests of hundreds of Palestinians.
