A third-generation submarine for Russia’s Pacific Fleet, the Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, equipped with Kalibr cruise missiles, was launched at the Admiralty Shipyard in St. Petersburg on Thursday.
The ceremony was attended by Deputy Chief of the Russian Navy Igor Mukhametshin, Chief of Staff of the Pacific Fleet Admiral Sergei Rekish, representatives of the management of the United Shipbuilding Corporation and the crew of the submarine.
Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky is the first submarine of the project 636.3 “Varshavyanka,” and will enter service in Russia’s Pacific Fleet during 2019. Altogether six submarines are expected to be built and delivered to the Pacific Fleet by 2022.
The Russian Navy already has other versions of the submarine in service with the Black Sea Fleet and, according to Mukhametshin, the model has proved its “high efficienct” during missions in the Mediterranean Sea.
