Chile: Santiago students clash with police on ‘Day of the Young Combatant’

Students clashed with police during a demonstration to celebrate the ‘Day of the Young Combatant’ in Santiago on Thursday. Using plastic bags and other objects, protesters set fire on different points of the street where the demonstration took place.

The protest was organised by Mecem (Student Movement against Commercial Education), formed mostly by secondary students. The demonstration reportedly ended with riot police trying to disperse students with a water cannon used to put out the fire.

The Day of the Young Combatant commemorates brothers Rafael and Eduardo Vergara Toledo, who were killed by security forces on March 29, 1985 during a protest in Villa Francia against Augusto Pinochet.
