British Prime Minister Theresa May maintained that the UK will leave the European Union after securing a delay to the Article 50 process at a European Council meeting in Brussels on Thursday.
“What the decision today underlines, is the importance of the House of Commons passing a Brexit deal next week,” May reminded MPs.
The choice was between backing the withdrawal deal, delivering the referendum result and leaving the EU in “an orderly manner” or participating in European Parliament elections, three years after the UK voted to leave the EU.
She said she would be “working hard to build support for getting the deal through.”
After her address to the nation on Wednesday night, May admitted her frustration with MPs, but added “I know that MPs are frustrated too.”
Brexit will be delayed until May 22, if MPs approve the Withdrawal Agreement next week.
The EU has also offered a shorter delay until April 12, allowing the UK time to indicate a way forward.
